The Story Behind the Name
Off Duty Heating and A/C is a second-generation HVAC company out of Burnet, Texas. The name is a joke Bryce tells with a straight face, because the truth is the opposite. Nobody here is ever really off duty.
2ndGeneration
Burnet, Texas · Est. in the Family Trade
Grown Up in Attics and Crawlspaces
Some people find the HVAC trade as adults. Bryce was raised in it. This is a second-generation company, which means the lessons started early: how to read a gauge set before most kids read a report card, why you torque a flare fitting instead of guessing, what happens to a family’s week when their AC dies in a Texas July. Ten years of hands-on work came before the company ever had its own name on a truck.
Off Duty exists because Bryce wanted to do the work his own way. Show up when you say you will. Explain the problem to the point, in plain English, with real numbers. Charge a fair price for work that holds up. That is the whole business plan, and it has not changed since day one. Three years in, the reviews coming out of Burnet keep repeating the same three words: honest, fair, showed up.
The name works two ways. Off duty is when your system decides to quit, evenings, weekends, the middle of a holiday cookout. And off duty is what we never quite are, because the phone is answered 24 hours a day and the on-call tech is usually the owner himself. Off duty name. On duty service.
The Hill Country makes this trade harder than the brochures admit. Limestone soaks up heat all day and radiates it back all night, so condensers out here run hours longer than the same unit would in a milder state. Lake humidity off Buchanan and LBJ works on coils and drain lines year round. Then a February front drops the temperature forty degrees in an afternoon and every heat pump in the county gets stress-tested at once. Equipment survives here when somebody sizes it right, installs it to spec, and maintains it like they mean it. That somebody is the job description.

How We Got Here
Four Chapters, One Trade
Family Roots
The trade comes down a generation. Bryce grows up around service calls, equipment talk at the dinner table, and the standard that a job is done when it is done right.
Ten Years on the Tools
A decade of installs, diagnostics, and repairs across Central Texas. Attics in August, crawlspaces in January, and every failure mode a Texas system can invent.
Off Duty Is Born
Bryce opens his own shop in Burnet with a straightforward promise: straight answers, fair prices, and a phone that gets answered around the clock.
Diamond Contractor
Mitsubishi awards Off Duty its top ductless credential, earned through factory training. Customers get factory-spec installs and the extended Diamond warranty.
The Off Duty Standard
What You Can Expect on Every Call
Every trade has its horror stories, and heating and air has more than its share. Mystery invoices, scare pitches, techs who sell instead of fix. We built this company to be the other kind of shop. Here is what that looks like when the truck pulls up to your house, whether you are in Burnet, Marble Falls, or an hour down the road.
- A real arrival window, kept. When Bryce says a time, that is the time. Customers write reviews about this because apparently it is rare. It should not be.
- The diagnosis, explained to the point. You get the actual failure, the actual fix, and the actual number before any work starts. Direct is the house style.
- Fair pricing, spoken out loud. The price comes before the work, not after. If a part is under warranty, we say so and file the claim ourselves.
- Honest advice on repair versus replace. If a repair is throwing money at a dying unit, you will hear that, along with what Bryce would do if it were his own house.
- Work that holds. Installed to spec, tested before we leave, and backed up if anything acts up after. We plan on being in Burnet a long time.
Fixed right, or he does not leave.
The reputation is the business plan
Brice did a fantastic job. He didn’t stop until he found the problem with my ac unit.

How We Work, Start to Finish
No mystery, no runaround. Every job, from a five-minute capacitor swap to a full system replacement, runs through the same four steps.
You Call, We Answer
Any hour, any day. A real person picks up, asks what the house is doing, and gives you an honest arrival window. Emergencies jump the line.
We Diagnose
Gauges on, panels off, actual testing. We find the real failure instead of swapping parts on a hunch. Wayne’s review says it best: he does not stop until he finds the problem.
We Explain It Straight
The failure, the fix, and the price, in plain English, before any work starts. Questions welcome. You decide, with all the facts in front of you.
We Fix and Verify
The repair or install gets done to spec, then tested under load before the truck leaves. Temperatures checked, pressures checked, paperwork handled.
Burnet Is Home
Rooted in the Highland Lakes
This is not a franchise with a call center three states away. Off Duty runs out of 904 Wofford Drive in Burnet, and the man who owns the company is the man in your attic. When the July 2025 flood tore through Burnet, Samaritan’s Purse partnered with Off Duty to replace a flooded family’s entire heating and cooling system. That family, the Alvarados, wrote afterward that they could not have asked for better care. That is the kind of neighbor we intend to be.
Off the clock, on the rare occasion there is an off the clock, Bryce is out on the water or in the deer blind with his family. Fishing, hunting, and family time is the whole rotation, which fits a company headquartered ten minutes from Lake Buchanan. It also means your tech actually understands what lake humidity does to a condenser coil, because he lives in it too.
Being local also changes how we stock the trucks. We know the housing stock out here, the 1970s ranch houses with undersized returns, the lake homes with twenty-year-old package units, the new builds around Georgetown and Leander with builder-grade equipment already limping at year five. The common failure parts for those exact systems ride on the truck, capacitors, contactors, fan motors, control boards, so most calls end with the system running the same visit instead of waiting on a parts order.
We work about 100 miles out from Burnet across sixteen counties of Central Texas, and you can see the kind of work we do any day of the week in our job photo gallery. No stock photos, no staged shoots. Just real installs and repairs from real houses around the lakes.
Questions About Us
The Ones People Actually Ask
Who actually shows up when I call?
Most of the time, Bryce himself. Off Duty is owner-operated, which means the person diagnosing your system is the person whose name is on the company. No rotating cast of subcontractors, no commissioned salesman following the tech through the door. When the company grows, it grows with people trained to the same standard, but the owner stays on the truck. That is a deliberate choice, because the fastest way to ruin a reputation in a town like Burnet is to send someone who does not care.
What does second-generation actually mean for my repair?
It means the training started a generation before the company did. Bryce learned this trade from family, then put ten years of professional work on top of it before opening Off Duty. Experience like that shows up in the diagnosis. A tech who has seen a thousand Central Texas systems knows that a tripping breaker in August is usually a failing capacitor pulling locked-rotor amps, and knows to check the contactor while the panel is already off. You pay for less guesswork and fewer return trips.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Off Duty Heating and A/C is a licensed Texas HVAC contractor and carries full insurance, and we are happy to show you the paperwork before work starts. On top of the state license, we hold Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor status, which requires ongoing factory training, and we are authorized for JB warranty service. Credentials do not swing a wrench, but they tell you who stands behind the work when it matters.
Why should I pick a small shop over a big-name company?
Ask the big-name company one question: who exactly is coming to my house? With us the answer is simple, and the incentives are different. A shop this size lives entirely on its Burnet-area reputation, so every single job has to end with a customer willing to recommend us to a neighbor. There is no advertising budget big enough to fix a bad name in a small town, so we protect the name the only way that works. We do the job right, we price it fair, and we answer the phone when you call back.
Do you only work in Burnet?
Burnet is home base, but the trucks run about 100 miles out across sixteen counties. The Highland Lakes towns, Marble Falls, Kingsland, Granite Shoals, and Horseshoe Bay, are everyday territory, and so is the Williamson County corridor through Liberty Hill, Georgetown, Cedar Park, and Round Rock. We also run to Austin, Killeen, Temple, San Marcos, New Braunfels, Waco, Fredericksburg, and Boerne. The full list is on our service areas page. If you are not sure, call and ask.
Do you push a particular brand of equipment?
We install what fits the house and the budget, and we will tell you the honest difference between the options. The one place we carry a flag is ductless: as a Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor we install a lot of Mitsubishi mini-splits, because the factory training and the extended Diamond warranty genuinely put the customer ahead. On central systems we work across the major brands and we service everything, including the brand your last contractor installed and disappeared on. Nobody at Off Duty earns a commission for putting a bigger system in your house, so the recommendation you get is the one Bryce would pick for his own place.
What is JB warranty work, and does my repair qualify?
JB Warranty is a third-party warranty administrator that a lot of equipment manufacturers and dealers use to handle extended coverage. Off Duty is an authorized JB warranty service provider, which means if your system carries that coverage, we can diagnose the failure, file the claim, and complete the covered repair without you playing middleman between a manufacturer and a contractor who do not talk to each other. Bring us your model and serial number, or just read it to us over the phone, and we will tell you what is covered before anyone touches the system.
How do I get on the schedule?
Two ways, both easy. Call (512) 925-3090 any hour of any day and a real person answers. Or send the form on our contact page with what the house is doing and we will call you back to set a time. Emergencies go to the front of the line around the clock. For everything else, we give you a real window and we keep it.
